Women Ordination

[1]

Galatians 3:28

King James Version

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 14:34, 35

King James Version

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches. For it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Paul is the great doctrine maker of the Christian Church. Christ brought the gospel, the good news, to the world; and Paul told us how to apply it. My mother felt that he must have had a very unhappy marriage at home. This is why he writes such things as we read about women in his epistles. At times, in fact she branded him as a woman hater.

My church, the Seventh-day Adventist church, is divided in its own interpretation of how to view women. Ellen White was probably the most influential of the founders of our church. She was a welcome speaker at many churches, camp meetings, and conference meetings. The General Conference viewed her as a wise counselor and yet feared her to the point that they banished her to Australia for over a decade to get her out of their hair. They offered to ordain her, and she turned them down flatly; yet today they are literally dividing the church because some women have been ordained by some entities in the church, and yet other entities refuse to even consider doing such.

Paul insisted that deacons and bishops (or elders) be the husband of one wife—clearly defining the leadership role to be male. The church followed Paul’s directions for roughly a century. However, throughout our history, women have been welcome speakers as well as Sabbath School and educational teachers and leaders. My paternal grandmother was a Michigan Conference departmental secretary of the Sabbath School Association[2] in the 1890s. Then they decided that these positions could only be held by ordained pastors. For decades pastors had to be men, so those positions have been strictly restricted to men.

Adventism finds itself in the unfortunate position of professing to be people of the Book, the Bible, but being inconsistent in its application to the extent of splitting the church. The Bible insists that elders and deacons must be men, and the church has officially chosen to ignore this principle and ordains both men and women to these positions. Yet on the other hand, it demands that only men can be ordained as pastors where the Bible says nothing in relation to this.

It appears that the church has only three choices on this issue:

1.   Return to the biblical definition that both elders and deacons must be men. Declare that when Paul wrote Galatians 3:28, he was only speaking about salvation’s being equally available to all people no matter what their earthly state is. This would make 1 Corinthians 14:34,35 consistent with Galatian 3:28.

2.   Apply Galatians 3:28 to all church posts, including pastors.

3.   Drop our profession of being people of the Book.

Whatever the eventual choice of the church on this issue, it is essential that we return to our original mission: to preach that Christ is coming soon and that He will be looking for those who are so anxious for His return that they are keeping His commandments.

Lord, please keep your mission for us ever before our eyes. May we strengthen and support anyone whom You have chosen to deliver that message.

Though Darkness Hide Me

[1]

Psalm 139:11-12

Good News Translation

11 I could ask the darkness to hide me
or the light around me to turn into night,
12 but even darkness is not dark for you,
and the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.

My brother, Elwood, was working with a group developing an infra-red camera that worked at ambient temperatures. He brought a prototype of their camera home with him one day and asked me if I would like to accompany him on some test runs. The night was very dark. We drove up Ortega Highway above Lake Elsinore and pulled into the parking lot of Lookout Restaurant. There were a number of cars parked there, undoubtedly belonging to the customers in the restaurant. The parking lot was unlit except for the area near the restaurant front door.

We pointed the camera down the steep slopes of the Santa Ana Mountains towards the town, to see what a city looks like in infra-red light. When another car drove by on the highway, we watched sparks shooting out from under the car. These sparks were totally invisible to the naked eye.

Over in the dark of the far corner of the parking lot, we could barely make out the shape of a car, its windows showing a dim reflection of the restaurant lights. When we turned this camera in that direction, the whole scene changed. A couple had spread a blanket out on the pavement next to their car. They were reclining on it romantically. They trusted the darkness to hide them, probably relishing the possibility of an adrenalin rush if some car were to turn its lights on them and discover their boldness. They never knew that their tryst was being filmed by a camera they didn’t see.

Far more perceptive than Elwood’s camera, God sees all things and knows all things, even the secrets of our hearts. He sees in light or darkness, even through walls and concrete. When we cry for help, He is always ready to rush to our rescue.

Thank You, Lord, that darkness and light are all the same to You. Thank You for being ready to help us in our time of need.

His Words Like Rain on Parched Earth

Deuteronomy 32:2

Good News Translation

My teaching will fall like drops of rain
and form on the earth like dew.
My words will fall like showers on young plants,
like gentle rain on tender grass.

For anywhere from ten to twelve months, the hills surrounding our home are dry and brown. We seldom get a drop of rain, and if by off chance it does rain, it does no visible good. Winter usually brings a rainy season, and we get several rains interspersed with cool weather. The long dormant seeds drink in the water and sprout. Within a few days, the brown is tinged with green. Then the green increases steadily, especially as it gets more showers. After a couple weeks, the hills are a lovely green. Flowers begin to appear. Actually, there are some flowers that seem to thrive, even in the driest of weather, but they are few and far between. On a walk in the hills, I usually spot 8 to 10 different kinds of flowers, tucked away here and there. But in the desert, those flowers actually disappear in the rain, and scores of kinds of flowers blossom in their place. At times the whole desert floor is vibrant with color. The Interstate that runs within a league from our home becomes severely congested by passersby enjoying the beauty.

Even so the words of the Gospel bring joy, gladness, and peace to those who believe when they read or hear them. These words lift the burden and stress formed by the cares and toils we encounter every day. They bring hope and anticipation to the hours that previously were but boredom and even dread.

So, take a few minutes now and refresh yourself with words from God’s Word.

Terrorists In Congress

[1]

Joshua 1:9

King James Version

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Two months ago, a monstrous, murderous mob stormed the legislative branch of the greatest democracy the world has ever known. Those there were unprepared, and yet no one in the government was harmed. Some of the defenders were harmed: that is why they were hired. Since then, the government has fortified the Capitol Building area so that no one can get in. It is patrolled by beefed up security and surrounded by steel fences and rolls of razor wire.

Not since August 24, 1814, when a British army marched into Washington and burnt the Capitol and the President’s Mansion has the Capitol been so threatened. Those soldiers were part of the most powerful army on earth, the ones who defeated Napoleon, the conqueror of Europe.

Now over two hundred years later, a threat to the safety of the capitol was announced by the FBI and the CIA. A group of disgruntled, yellow-livered malcontents have threatened to destroy congress-men and -women. Sure, they profess patriotism, but these well-armed traitors will end up taking away our freedoms. Their primary goal is to shut down congress and stop the process of government. In the past no one would have taken them seriously.

What have these miscreants achieved? Exactly that! Congressmen, scared and afraid to do the very work they have been elected to do, have opted to cower at home. They have been elected to represent us—and the free world. Their work spaces are barricaded behind all those fortifications, and yet they have allowed treasonous conspirators to shut down congress. How awful! Congress should be covering their faces for shame.

Our congress members need to take the commission that God gave Joshua to be strong and of good courage, to not be afraid nor dismayed. Representatives and Senators, get down on your knees, claim this promise God made to Joshua, and do the right for us, your supporters and electors!

May God give our elected officials courage and determination to represent us boldly and in good faith the way we have elected them for!
